Flow Arts
What is flow arts?
Flow arts, as defined by the Flow Arts Institute, is “the intersection of a variety of movement-based disciplines including dance, juggling, fire-spinning, and object manipulation.”
I personally like to define flow arts as a usage of any prop or object that acts as an extension of the individual’s movement. Simply put, object manipulation for the intended purpose of self-expression. This leaves a wide-open area and discussion for what may or may not be included in the “flow arts,” however as we are seeing there are many ways where we can use props as aids in movement (kettle bell, wooden clubs, buugeng). For any individuals that have practices in yoga, tai chi, or dance know that when you add props to a routine it can greatly enhance any practice.
The flow arts today is composed of a mixed group of individuals not quite clearly labeled. Flow artists come from many different backgrounds involving dance, circus arts, martial arts, music concerts/festivals, artists, theatre, fitness groups, etc. Today the flow arts scene, I’d like to say, is a movement. A movement towards loving and accepting yourself and your body, and expressing your movement as art. The community is welcoming and kind to new-comers or seasoned movement artists, old and young.

I thought it’d be handy to keep a running calendar of all the flow arts events (that I’m aware of; also will be biased because I’m living in the Pacific NW).
